The town's name comes from "mill stream," a nod to the water-powered mills that once drove its early economy, and it was officially incorporated in 1878.

In 1964, an aircraft parts manufacturing plant opened in town, eventually employing more than 400 people and helping the population nearly double by 1970. Then in 1975, Ozarka College opened its main campus in Melbourne, bringing higher education to the region and establishing the town as a hub for learning that continues today, with the college now serving well over a thousand students across its programs.

Downtown Melbourne reflects its long history as a county seat, anchored by the Izard County Courthouse and several other properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Like many Ozark towns, Melbourne has weathered its share of hardship, including courthouse fires and destructive tornadoes, and rebuilt each time, a testament to the resilience of the community.
