Perched on a plateau in the Ozark Mountains between two of the region's largest lakes, Mountain Home is the seat of Baxter County and the hub of what locals proudly call the "Twin Lakes Area." With Norfork Lake just 15 minutes to the east and Bull Shoals Lake about 20 minutes northwest — plus the White River and Buffalo National River within easy reach, it's one of the most water-rich, recreation-friendly places to live in the entire state.

The town's roots go back to the early 1800s, when it was known as "Rapp's Barren," and it grew slowly as a rural farming community before being named Baxter County's seat in 1873. Everything changed in the mid-20th century when the Norfork Dam (completed 1944) and Bull Shoals Dam (completed 1951) were built as New Deal-era projects. Almost overnight, Mountain Home transformed from an isolated Ozark town into a booming destination, and a world-class trout hatchery built below Norfork Dam in 1957 helped earn the region a reputation as "the trout capital of the world."

That reputation still holds today. Anglers travel from across the country for the Norfork and White River tailwaters, while boaters, swimmers, and lake lovers flock to Bull Shoals and Norfork Lakes for some of the clearest water in the Ozarks. Downtown Mountain Home carries its own historic charm as well, with landmarks like the WPA-built Baxter County Courthouse and the Casey House, along with the beloved Twin Lakes Playhouse, which has been staging community theater since 1971.

Mountain Home has also grown into a genuine regional hub. Baxter Health anchors a strong healthcare sector and employs around a thousand people, while Arkansas State University–Mountain Home brings higher education right into town. Add in a diverse manufacturing base, including well-known boat builders like Ranger Boats, Vexus Boats and Bass Cat Boats, as well as manufacturing companies like Baxter and American Epoxy Scientific, and Mountain Home offers a far more robust local economy than many towns its size, drawing business from seven surrounding counties.

It's no surprise that Mountain Home has become one of the Ozarks' most popular retirement destinations, with roughly a third of residents retired, while still holding plenty of appeal for families and working professionals thanks to strong schools, quality healthcare, and a genuinely low cost of living. Whether it's the lakes, the healthcare, the schools, or simply the pace of life, Mountain Home offers small-town warmth with the amenities of a much bigger city.
