Founded in 1839 by War of 1812 veteran William P. Morris, the town was first known as Pilot Hill before officially becoming Salem in 1872, though locals had already been calling it that for years.

Salem sits right at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 62/412 and several state highways, making it an easy hub for reaching the rest of North Central Arkansas. The town is also blessed with water on both sides, with the South Fork of the Spring River and the nearby Strawberry River offering some of the best fishing and floating in the area.
